Task
Given a mock scenario, a camera, computer with internet access, and a Smart Board, the Medical Assisting (MA) student will demonstrate knowledge of emergency preparedness by creating a plan for the medical office in the event of a disaster. The MA student will also teach the plan to the rest of the class as if teaching the plan to fellow medical office personnel.
You will:
- Understand the Medical Assistant's role in emergency preparedness
- Develop an evacuation plan of a medical office
- Explain Safety Zones and where they are located
- Use technology to create an effective teaching presentation
- Conduct a presentation to teach emergency preparedness to mock office personnel.
Your Goal:
Plan an evacuation procedure for a medical office based on the possibility of a disaster common to the given geographical region.
Your role:
You are the lead medical assistant at your clinic. You have been given the responsibility to plan evacuation procedures in the event of a disaster.
Your Audience:
You will present your evacuation plan to your clinic as an introduction to emergency preparedness training. Your audience will be the office manager, business staff, medical doctors and the other allied health professionals that work in the building.
Your Situation:
You will be assigned a certain geographical region of the United States. You will research on-line the risk for disasters in your region and craft your emergency preparedness and evacuation route based on a disaster common to the region. You will also be given a floor plan of your office with the layout of the surrounding landscape.
Your Product or Performance:
A brief description of your evacuation plan will be presented to the class who will represent the clinic staff. You will use the Digital Photography, Power Point, and the Smart Board (where your floor plan & landscape will be provided) to trace your evacuation route for all to review. You will conduct a discussion and feedback session with the “staff”. You will outline your plan for rehearsal drills with the group.
Your Standards:
The evacuation plan must be based on the Emergency Preparedness practices of the region.
The evacuation plan must be able to be executed and completed in 20 minutes
The plan must be easy to follow and execute.
The plan must be articulated well within 10-15 minutes.
