Process
Follow these steps to complete your webquest:
Step 1: First, we will read through this entire webquest together and review all specific directions. We will discuss any new or tricky vocabulary words (these are green in color). Next, we will preview the websites you'll be using. We will discuss the rubric (the grading scale, or what I am looking for when I grade your work). We will talk about the presentation and the possible projects you can create to share with the class.
You should ask any questions you have about any of the steps during this time.
Step 2: Print 2 graphic organizers. Read them. Be sure you understand the information you'll need to fill them out. You should fill them out as you explore the websites I've selected for you. Don't forget to apply all the writing conventions you know on your forms. To print your organizers click here.
Step 3: Explore the following websites for the information you will put on the graphic organizers. Filling out 2 graphic organizers means that you should find and record at least 6 different traditions or customs from cultures other than your own.
- WorldBook Holidays
- Holidays at Kids' Turn Central
- Around the World at Santa's Net
- Christmas from the North Pole
- December Holidays
- Happy Holidays
- Teachers' First Christmas
- Christmas Cultures
- Christmas Worldwide
- Christmas Traditions Around the World
- Christmas Traditions
- History of Christmas
- Yahoo Kids' Christmas
Step 4: Select the one tradition you found most interesting. Write a paragraph in one of the boxes at the bottom of one of your organizers, explaining why you selected that particular tradition. Here are some questions to get you thinking:
What, specifically, did you find interesting?
Why is that interesting to you?
You might want to think about how the tradition you selected is different from the traditions you enjoy. Is it the same in any way?
Step 5: Decide what format you'd like to use to present the tradition you found most interesting to the class. Please discuss your project with your teacher before starting. Some ideas you could use include:
- Poster
- Banner
- Pop-Up Card
- Diorama
- Post Card
- Brochure
- Picture Frame
- Craft an Object (where appropriate to custom or tradition)
Be sure to include the following on your visual presentation:
- Error-free text (labels or short phrases only) to explain the custom or tradition you selected
- Graphics that clearly demonstrate your tradition or custom
- Any additional graphics/color that will make your piece attractive
- Your name (as the artist/creator)
Step 6: This is your final step! You will present your final project (from step 5) to the class. Be sure to include all the communication skills we've discussed in class:
- Maintain eye contact with your audience
- Speak loudly enough for all to hear
- Speak clearly
- Use expression and enthusiasm that is appropriate to your topic
- Tell why you selected the tradition (your paragraph)
- Tell about the graphics/labels you selected and why they are relevant to your tradition
