Teacher Process
This web quest includes four main parts.
1. Pros/Cons of Uniforms Research
- This portion of the web quest will take about 1week to complete. Students need plenty of computer time to explore the included resources.
-
If possible, see if principals/teachers/classes at regional schools which currently have a school uniform policy would like to correspond with your students/classes. This would be a great opportunity for students to gather information from primary sources.
2. Pros/Cons Persuasive Papers
- Since these papers are done in pairs, be sure to provide students enough time to plan and write their papers. A great concept map is included in the web quest, however if time in the computer lab is limited, students could hand-write this part using a blank concept map.
- You could choose to have students write their papers individually. Be sure to check IEP's to allow enough time for students with special needs. You may even consider an alternate form of presentation, such as using Comic Life, providing a power point /presentation template for them to complete with their information, or another presentation style.
- Another option would be to have students use Audacity to create an oral report or "radio"
editorial using their research notes. (Before offering this option, make sure you have a good computer microphone and speakers.)
3. Clothing Costs
- Students will need one or two days in the computer lab to complete this activity. One day should be sufficient if all groups are ready with the specific clothing choices before going to the lab.
- This activity could be a whole class activity if you have a projector and Internet access in the classroom. Current clothing could be chosen by brainstorming popular brands and choosing a couple to research along with local department stores' clothing.
- School uniform/standardized dress choices could be taken from South Bend's school uniform policies or the proposed clothing included in the Pharos Tribune article.
- Average prices for current clothing styles and school uniforms could be provided to students for comparison.
4. Presentation
- Students will need plenty of computer time to complete their presentations. This will take at least 3-5 days, possibly more, for students to create outstanding presentations worthy of all their work.
- Since students are using GoogleDocs to collaborate, if each student does his/her part and remains focused, a lesser amount of time may be needed.
- Consider a change in venue for the actual presentations. Would it feel more formal for your students to present in the library/media center? Is your auditorium available?
