Process
- Using your research, create a hand drawn map which shows the route your wagon train will
take beginning at your jumping off point in Independence, Missouri and ending in your destination of Sacramento, California. The map should identify all physical land markers
(Independence Rock, Chimney Rock, Devil’s Gate, etc.) as well as bodies of
water and land features/terrain (deserts, mountains, etc.)
- Create a schedule for your travels, based on the route you have chosen, that will ensure your arrival in the Sierra’s before the first snow falls of the year. Take into account location climate/temperature, terrain, animal loss, and all factors that may slow or impede your progress.
Use the attached resources to support your mapping and schedule making activities:

- Create a list of proposed supplies, using the attached form, which
does not exceed the maximum weight of 1,100 lbs. and a maximum cost of $265.00. Assume a total of five persons traveling with your wagon
(two adults, three children).
As the wagon master, you must pack
your wagon wisely for the arduous journey across the Oregon and California
Trail. Your guide will lead you through the Cumberland Gap. You, however, are responsible for all of
your own supplies. Use the following chart to help you choose which items
you will need for your trip. There are a total of five people (two
adults, three children) traveling with your wagon. You may spend a total of $265.00 for supplies. Your
wagon can only carry 1,100 lbs. Each member in your group needs to be given 25
lbs. for personal belongings (clothes, coats, etc.) These items don't cost you
any money, but they do reduce the weight left for supplies. Remember,
these are supplies that you will need to help you on your journey and to start
your new life in the valley.
Once you have made your selections, create a list of your supplies that includes the list item, item cost, item weight, total cost, and total weight using Excel or other spreadsheet software. You cannot spend or carry more
than the maximums listed above. START PACKING
