Junior Advisor to Secretary of Defense,

My office has come up with a series of tasks for you to accomplish in an effort to prepare for your report to the Whitehouse in two days.

The tasks will consist of you researching three particular conflicts from the past century.

1. World War One

2.  World War Two

3.  The Vietnam Conflict

Using certain websites you will research the backgrounds to each of these conflicts and you will identify the specific reasons for the United States to become involved in them.

We have also identified a specific list of questions that your research should be able to address.

1.  What are some of the reasons behind the United States going to war with another nation in past conflicts?

2.  According to your analysis, were these reasons convincing for the American people, why or why not?

3.  What materials has the United States utilized in the past to generate public support for military action?

4.  What lessons can be learned as to how violent conflict might be avoided in the future?

 5.  If military action seems to be the optimal solution, then what methods are useful in gaining the support of the American people?

Finally prepare your findings in a multimedia presentation for the Whitehouse that you will present in two days.

Good Luck,

Secretary of State Colin Powell
