Process

The way that you traditionally think about transportation could come to a screeching halt.  With our main source of fuel for transportation being petroleum, a finite resource, how dependable can our transportation systems be?

Sustainable transportation looks at different fuel sources and the pieces of infrastructure required in order to supply this fuel source.  Additionally, this type of thinking also considers the emissions created by using or burning this fuel source.

Today, you will act as scientist researching the next fuel source for transportation.  With this research you will be presenting to a group of investors eager to beat the curve and win big in the market for sustainable fuel sources.

Your group will each have different roles, including

-2 research specialist whose responsibilities include assigning roles for research, deciphering the research

-1 PowerPoint Pro who responsibilities include putting together the PowerPoint

-1 Supervisor who will be the runner for the group getting necessary materials, keeping track of time, managing the stress, and being the motivator.

Below, you will find some resources that have been set aside for you.  These are only suggestions, additional resources can be found all over the web.  Make sure you are using reputable and scientifically reviewed sites just as your have learned about in previous classes.

Propane: A

Biodiesel: B

Hydrogen: C

Ethanol: D

Electricity: E

Natural Gas: F

Before you move on to the brainstorming part of this assignment, take a second with your group to understand the time constraints.  It is crucial you finish your analysis of the alternative fuel source.  To do this you have 50 minutes to put together the needed resources.  In order to help you, a wonderful resource has been put together that talks briefly about time management.

It's now time to brainstorm.

Your group should take time to look over the listed section.  It could  help you to come up with appropriate research.

Additionally, you need to make sure you use at least two sources in your PowerPoint presentation.  You can count the one provided as one of these.

Is your web page reputable?

Once you have compiled research,  the group needs to come to a concensus on what will be presented.  You must remember that your research needs to justify how sound this alternative fuel source is for the potential investors.

If you need tips, look back to the evaluation chart in order to see what will be considered from the standpoint of the teacher, as this will provide a well rounded view of what the investors are looking for.

It's now time that your group come up with the all important presentation for the investors. Before you can do this though,  evaluate your progress with these questions:

Did you group choose websites and gather photos of where this fuel comes from and whether it is finite?

Did your group discover what kinds of emissions are created, if any by using or burning this fuel source?

Did your group research the type of potential infrastructure needed in order to make this fuel available to communities and individuals around the world?

Did you happen to come up with a monetary figure for this?

Was your group able to secure a price per gallon for this fuel source?

If you were able to answer yes to these questions you are now able to start on the presentation.

For this presentation you will be using PowerPoint, a resource that you have used before and should be familiar with.  If, for what ever reason you need help, find the teacher.

In this PowerPoint Presentation make sure to use pictures to make it visually appealing, sound research from reputable sources and to include all of the necessary aspects of the project.  These include:

-Where this fuel comes from and whether it is finite

-The fuel source and what kinds of emissions are created by using or burning

-The infrasrtucture in order to make this fuel available

-Price per gallon of this fuel source
