Teacher Process

What Do I Do?

Step 1:  Get ready to have fun.  Begin with reading some of your favorite children's books to your class.  Discuss with them the rubric and any portions that haven't been covered such as figurative language or graphic organizers.  This could be done in as short a time as a single class period or it could take a week if you are wanting to do some writing samples with figurative language or note taking with graphic organizers.  This is up to you.

Step 2: This is the fun part, simply watch your students creative juices flow.  Give students a week of LA periods to create their story.  Have them self edit and turn in a final edited copy to you by the end of the week. Students who are writing for an older grade level may have longer time as a modification.  Feel free to make any suggestions to their book you choose but be cautious to keep it their book.  Students can take or leave your suggestions.

Step 3:  Give students the opportunity to type and possibly illustrate, if they are using computer generated illustrations, their books.  This can take as little or as long as you decide.  Some students who have had keyboarding will complete this quickly, while others you may have to assist much more.  Generally two class periods should be enough for students to get their work typed.  If students are having their books illustrated by someone or doing it by hand... they will need extended time.

Step 4:  Using your rubric and the rubric the students have, grade the projects.  Schedule time with fellow teachers to have your students read their stories to the appropriate grade level.

Step 5:  Display the books in the library for others to enjoy.
