Teacher Process
Teacher Tips
1. The list of flowers is tentative and may be adapted to suit your classroom needs. If you have a majority of male students who may be uncomfortable with flowers you may substitute plant names. Remember, this is about the process, not the product.
2. As the students research their flower, allow them autonomy but be there to guide their learning. Ask open ended questions to get their thoughts going on a topic. Lay out other non-fiction books for the students to use as they write. Ask students to point out what information is included in most of the books. Allow the answers to come from the class in order to promote critical thinking.
3. Walk around as the maps are being constructed. Are the partners giving feedback? Do they have enough information?
4. Constructing the book will be a lot of fun but it also needs to be done in a neat and careful manner. Provide paper, crayons, markers, scissors and other materials for the book. You can get as creative as you like with the materials.
5. Be sure to follow-up with the students' work so that this task is meaningful for them.
