Using primary sources and biographical accounts, students will develop and write a fictional diary relating to the life and times of African American Abolitionist leader, Sojourner Truth.

Teacher Introduction

One challenge we face is motivating students to complete historical research and to create unique, interesting products from that research. Traditional term papers don't challenge our computer savvy students. In this web quest, students are challenged to create a diary based on the opportunities and dilemmas faced by one of the most fascinating women of Antebellum America, Sojourner Truth. By searching historical accurate websites and primary documents, learners will be developing the higher learning skills of synthesis, evaluation and analysis.

This web quest was developed as part of the Leadership in America: Dilemmas and Opportunities program funded by "A Teaching American History" Grant funded by the United States Department of Education in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Lowell and seven Merrimack Valley school districts.
