 Teacher Process

Building Background Knowledge:

Although this WebQuest can provide a wonderful addition to any fairy tale unit, it is by no means the only resource to be used.  Before engaging in this WebQuest activity, it is critical to introduce both traditional fairy tales as well as fractured fairy tales to students through literature such as picture books.  In the "Teacher Resources" section of this WebQuest you will find links to lists of fairy tale and fractured tale picture books.  While introducing fairy tales to students, explore common themes and vocabulary of fairy tales.  This will provide the necessary background knowledge for students to successfully complete this WebQuest.

Necessary Skills and Time:

Students will need to be familiar with the use of computer technology, specifically the use of the the internet (navigating websites) and word processing software (such as Microsoft Word).  The amount of time that students will require to complete these WebQuest tasks will depend on how much time students are given on a daily or weekly basis to do the required reading of the traditional and fractured fairy tales as well as plan and write their fractured fairy tale compositions.  Considering that these tasks would most likely be included in reading and/or writing blocks, teachers can expect that students will need between 8 and 12 hours over 1-2 weeks.  Students of varying reading abilities could potentially require more time.

Curriculum Integration:

There are ways that the study of fairy tales can be integrated into other academic subjects:

History/Social Studies

The origins of fairy tales can be explored (as well as the origins of fables) to explore the common themes and history behind the most prominent stories.  Fairy tales from other regions of the world can also be compared and contrasted to the versions we are familiar with (see "Multicultural Versions of Cinderella" in Teacher Resources).

Art

There are ways that art can also be integrated into the study of fairy tales, including explorations of fairy tale illustrations within picture books, etc.
