Teacher Process

Here is the breakdown of the sequence and assignments:

1. In groups of three students will research the definitions of quality, compelling, and aesthetically-pleasing; for each of the three concepts, students will write a paragraph response using the phrase A magazine is (concept) when it...

   Time: 1 hour

    Paragraphs are checked off for completion.

2. Students will research and identify three key components common to successful publications that epitomize the concepts quality, compelling, and aesthetically-pleasing; students will define each of the three components, explain its importance as a crucial aspect of a reputable periodical, and what would determine excellence.

    Time: 1 hour  

   Paragraphs are graded and responded to by instructor (rubric is in webquest)

3. Students will create a rubric, developing criteria for three levels of achievement for each of the components they have developed.

   Time: 1.5 hours

   Rubrics are graded and responded to by instructor (rubric is in webquest)

4. Taking on the role of editorial judges, each group will assess a magazine given to them by the instructor, using the rubric they have created to determine if the publication merits a coveted Magemmy, the Emmy of the magazine world.

    Time: .5 hours

    Decision is noted by instructor. 

5. Groups will produce an argumentative essay, either justifying their award or denial of a Magemmy to the periodical.

    Time: 2.5- 3.5 hours (in and out of class)
