Social Studies Standards:
Kansas History Standard Benchmark 1:  The student understands the significance of important individuals and major developments in history.  

Indicator 1: The student researches the contributions made by notable Kansans in history (e.g., Dwight David Eisenhower, Alf Landon, Amelia Earhart, George Washington Carver, Robert Dole, William Allen White, Langston Hughes, Carry A. Nation, Black Bear Boslin, Gordon Parks, Clyde Cessna, Charles Curtis, Walter Chrysler, Wyatt Earp).

Reading Standards:
Reading Standard 1:  The student reads and comprehends text across the curriculum.

Reading Standard 1 Benchmark 2 Indicator 5:  The student adjusts reading rate to support comprehension when reading narrative, expository, technical, and persuasive texts.

Reading Standard 1 Benchmark 3 Indicator 1:  The student determines the meaning of words or phrases by using context clues from sentences or paragraphs.

Reading Standard 1 Benchmark 4 Indicator 4:  The student generates and responds logically to literal, inferential, and critical thinking questions before, during, and after reading the text.

Reading Standard 1 Benchmark 4 Indicator 7:  The student compares and contrasts information in one or more appropriate-level text(s).

Reading Standard 1 Benchmark 4 Indicator 12:  The student establishes a purpose for reading or listening.

Reading Standard 2 Benchmark 1 Indicator 1:   The student identifies and describes characters' physical traits, personality traits, and feelings, and explains reasons for characters' actions and the consequences of those actions.

Writing Standard:
Writing Standard 1:  The student writes effectively for a variety of audiences, purposes, and contexts.
