Process
The first step that you will take is to each do individual research, on-line, using the following websites. (Remember to take notes during this process, the notes will help you keep facts straight and help you to remember the main points.)
Explore some of these websites:

5.) American Heart Association

Next, your teacher will divide you into groups of four or five.

First, you will start with a discussion based on the information that you researched on-line. Remember to bring your notes.
Compare your notes to see if your classmates found the same information as you did.
After comparing your notes, discuss the questions: Please refer to the above questions and answers. (Pick a group leader to rewrite main points on a separate paper.)

Did you all have similar answers?
Next, discuss why it is important to know these facts. (Hint: when a person is ill, it affects other people; financially (think hospital bills), time wise, burdens family, and lost work & wages)
Note: The group leader does not write for the next section, just discuss.
Do you or someone you know smoke or use tobacco products?
If you answered yes, how does this make you feel?
(you may have many different feelings about this.)
Are you sad
or angry
or do you think that the person is cool
?
How old is the person?
Why do you think they smoke or use other tobacco products?

O.K., now that you have information about tobacco products and their affect on people's health, what would you say to someone that offers you a cigarette or some other tobacco product like chew?
The final step is to reflect on what you have just discussed and write a journal about your feelings regarding tobacco products like cigarettes.

Some things to think about:
Has someone you love become sick or has died from smoking? ![]()
How does it make you feel when someone smokes around you, like in your home or in the car? Or how do you feel when one of your friend's parents smoke around you?
Why would someone want to spend that much money on something that will possibly make them ill later in life?
How would you tell a friend or someone else "NO" you don't want a cigarette?

These are important questions to ask yourself. It is your body and your health that will be affected if exposed to tobacco or second hand smoke. You have the right to say "Please do not smoke while I am around".
