The purpose of this Webquest is to provide more information to students about the early days of the United States of America, after we became a free nation, in order for them to be able to write a realistic short fiction set during this time period.
In my opinion, many students are very drawn to the idea of American independence, and thus, the American Revolution and the personalities found within. Interest tends to wane, however, after study of the war has finished. And yet, these early figures and documents were very critical in establishing the nation we live in today. While some children might know little details about the early presidents, it is important for them to fully understand the post-war political climate and what it spawned.
Creating a story is a very effective way for children to become fully immersed in the study of American history. In order to write a good story, they more or less have to research early America.
