Process
Look at the paintings of Kandinsky and identify those who are representing figurative subjects and those who are abstract. Write titles of those on a sheet, making one column of the abstract paintings and one column of figurative ones. ![]()
Click on the links above and find at least 3 figurative paintings and 3 abstract paintings.

1. First, when looking at the paintings of Kandinsky, write a list of emotions that you feel when looking at them. An emotion is a non-material word related to feelings like joyful, sad, obscure, love...
2. From the list below choose one word and associate it to a color (p.e. fear = black).
3. On a canvas paint the chosen color on the entire surface as a first background.
4. Experiment mixing different colors on a big paper.
5. When the painting in 3 is dry you can add other colors by doing textures and juxtaposition. You can add water to acrylic paint to make it look transparent. Play with transparencies and thickness of paint to create an atmosphere you like.
6. With the chosen word in 2 write a sentence on a paper that delivers a message like ''War is fearing me''.
7. When the painted background is dry, draw geometric shapes and lines with a white chalk keeping your sentence in mind. Paint those shapes and lines any colors that you will think that will help understanding your message.
Here are several sites that would help you to build a better understanding of abstract paintings. ![]()
