Teacher Process

Step 1: Review any information/term students will need to know prior to embarking on this journey. For examlpe, what carnivore, omnivore, and herbivore mean, how to get to a link and what to look for, where to record information, etc.

Step2: Print-out/download the Data/Record Sheet template in the teacher resources (or develop one of your own if you like) copy and distribute to students.

Step 3: Go over the data sheets so everyone understands what they are looking for and where to record it. You may want to go over the rubric so students are aware of what is expected of them throughout the quest as well.

Step 4: For younger students you may want to do a demonstration. Then break them into exploration teams and let them begin the adventure!

Step 5: Guide students as they visit each continent and decide which animals they want to collect. This may spark some debate so you may need to have them vote, or allow each member to choose the animal of their choice. This last option will take more time but makes for a more interesting presentation in the end as each student will need to present the animals that he/she chose.

Step 6: After all the information has been collected and recorded, have groups begin designing their Safari Guides. The cover will be the most creative component. The rest of the guide should include their data sheets, fun fact/information and the pictures of each animal.

Step 7: After all groups have finished designing and putting together their Safari Guides, print or download the rubric and have students begin their presentations.

Step 8: Score the projects with the included rubric and allow interested students to explore the additional links in the conclusion.

This WebQuest will take some time (probably a couple of days to a week) depending on how much time you have to devote to it. The end product - the Safari Guide - makes a great piece to present to parents at conferences or Open House as well. Good luck on your journey and have fun!
