Teacher Process
This WebQuest is designed to take approximately three class periods, depending on available access to a computer lab.
This lesson is designed for students taking Calculus. The topic of Optimization is a practical application of determining maximum and minimum values using the first and second derivatives. Optimization involves real-world practical problems that find the maximum or minimum values possible, given certain parameters.
The objectives are using these parameters, the student should possess the following prerequisite skills in Calculus.
- Be able to determine an appropriate interval of values
- Be able to choose an appropriate model (equation)
- Be able to differentiate the model, finding the critical values.
- Be able to test these values that lie in the interval against the endpoints of the interval
- Be able to make a judgment as to the maximum or minimum values possible.
In addition, the student should possess the following general skills:
-
Be able to use an Internet Browser
-
Possess adequate keyboarding skills
-
Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Power Point
