Task
The origin of The Screwtape Letters has never been fully told. In the preface to the book, C.S. Lewis said he had "no intention of explaining how the correspondence ... fell into my hands."
What is known is that the letters appear to be correspondence between a high-ranking tempter and his nephew, who is just out of tempter college and still rather naive as he gets his start in the tempting business.
Your job is that of a Christian literary critic. Read The Screwtape Letters and take careful notes. Then use Scripture and the following Web sites to research the letters. Are they an accurate portrayal of the Christian life? Of Satan?
When your research is finished, you will write a 750-word essay, much like a critic would, defending or criticizing the letters as a legitimate look into a tempter's world or mere propaganda designed to convince the young tempter that his cause is just. Stay objective, look at both sides of the story. Don't be fooled by flowery language or jargon -- stay on task.
Your conclusion should include a scriptural word of warning to your fellow Christians as to how to defeat their tempters.
