Process
First, we need to look into the ten places the students chose. It is helpful to write down where they are (the address) and how much they cost (sometimes adults and students have different prices)
1. The Aviary 6. The zoo
2. The symphony
7. The state capital
3. Ice Skating 8. Museum of natural history
4. The Clark Planetarium 9. Discovery Gateway
5. Kearns High School Play 10. Lagoon
Choose the three places that you think would be the best field trips this year. Put the names of the places in the dark brown ovals in this program.
Even though you picked 3 places, you should concentrate on one at a time and compare them at the end.
Cost of attendance:
You must write the following information in the appropriate areas of the program:
1. Cost per student
2. Cost per adult
These go in the red oval for the price per student, and the light green oval next to it for the price per adult.
Cost of buses:
Now that you know where you might go, let's find out how much it costs to get there. One thing to consider, there is no bus cost if you walk, go to the symphony, or go ice skating.
Using google maps, find driving directions from the school to your field trip destination.
Write down the travel time.
Fill in the yellow ovals labeled "time at location" and "travel time to and from school" on the program. Add the time it takes to get there, the time it takes to get back to get the travel time, and if you add the time you will be there, you will have the total time. Put the total time in the light green oval above the other times.
Now we need to decide how many people will go on the field trip. The benefit of having more people go is that we can use more than one class's money for the trip. The drawback is that it will be crowded and we need more adults to supervise. Here are the rules to remember when thinking about numbers of people.
o Each class has about 27 students. Each class has about $150.00 for field trips. So 2 classes will have 54 students and $300.00 to spend.
o Each bus can hold up to 88 people.
o There must be 1 adult for every 5 students (including the teacher)

Once you have decided how many people will go on the field trip, put the numbers in the appropriate places on the program.
o The number of parents and teachers go in the blue ovals
o The number of students goes in the red oval
o For each class, add $150.00 and put this number in the oval at the top left, labeled, "available money"
o For every 88 people, you have to get a bus, this number goes in the light green oval under the purple "bus cost" oval.
o Add the number of parents and teachers and put that number in the light green oval above those numbers.
o Multiply the number of adults by the price per adult and put the answer in the orange oval above it
o Multiply the number of students and the price per student and put the answer in the orange oval above it
o Add the cost of the students to the cost of the adults and put the answer in the purple "total entry cost" oval
o Multiply the number of buses by the number of hours. Take that answer and multiply it by $50.00. This gives you the bus cost. Put this number in the purple oval labeled "bus cost"
o Add the numbers in the purple ovals to get the total cost. This number goes in two places. First it goes in the "total cost" oval. It also belongs in the "cost of place" oval on the left (these ovals are color coded based on the place).
o You may notice that the trip costs more than the available money you have. You may discard this fieldtrip as too expensive, or you may look for a way to get more funds (add more classes)
Repeat this process for the other 2 field trip choices you made.
Now you have three choices and you know the cost of each choice. As a group you must decide which, if any, of these field trips should be chosen.
After deciding on a fieldtrip, you must convince your fellow students in the school (especially any other classes you may have included in order to afford the trip).
You must make a poster, using Publisher, which advertises the location as a great place to go on a field trip.
OR
You must make a presentation, using PowerPoint, to convince other students that using the money this way would be the best choice for them.
The deadline for this presentation is one week from today!
