Teacher Process
The goal of this WebQuest is to provide students with an enjoyable way to learn about the 1920s during the time in which F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby was published. The context of the WebQuest is that several students have been appointed to decorate a cruise ship in the decor of the 1920s and plan a cruise aboard the USS F. Scott Fitzgerald. TheWebQuest consists of 5 roles-Interior designer, Master chef, Entertainment planner, Fashion coordinator, and Omium gatherum (miscellaneous information gatherer). I have assigned 2 students per role because the assignments are rather large and students will probably feel more confident if they work in pairs for each role; therefore, the entire quest would use at least 10 students. The products of the quest consist of 3 items: a project board, a brochure, and an oral presentation. I have found many fascinating links to rich sites about the 1920s. I plan to use this with an 11 Honors English class. I would allow 3-4 days in the lab and then 3-4 more days before the products are due.
The entire Gatsby Unit from start to finish would take approximately 4 weeks. The quest products could be modified to suit your students' needs and talents.
