Task

Writing on Rights!

Rooting for Rights!

By the end of the unit, you will know a lot about the history of human rights.  You will learn about children's rights and develop your own ideas about children's rights.  Then  your team will (1) take a position on whether or not the U.S. should ratify the Convention on the Rights of the child, and (2) write a letter to a U.S. Senator asking him or her to act.

Throughout the year,  you will continue to learn about children's rights and issues by following web sites designed for kids from Oxfam, Amnesty International and the United Nations. (You may find other web sites).  The three organizations have web sites in Spanish and English!   You will also keep track of issues/topics related to rights from conversations with family members, incidents you witness, discussions with friends, etc.  As a class, you will create a WIKI or Blog.  This will be a discussion forum for your class to continue talking about rights and issues which you think are important to kids.  You will publish what you learn at other web sites and write your ideas.  By the end of the school year, you'll be an expert on many  issues and rights important to kids.
