Teacher Process
Notes:
If there are not enough computers available, this WebQuest may be modified so that students complete the assignments in pairs or groups.
If you have many shy students in the class who may not particpate in a large group discussion, it might be useful to break the class discussion time into smaller discussion groups. At this point, it would be necessary to walk around and make sure the students are staying on task and talking about the assignment, as opposed to the latest gossip or sporting event. Because of this, though, a large group discussion is still preferred so that it could be moderated by the teacher.
Although this WebQuest is designed as a "before we read" lesson, it is also possible to adapt it to be used while the students are in the process of reading the novel. The heroism discussion could then include more comparison of the main character, Bilbo Baggins, to characteristics of a hero. This may be ideal for a tight school-year schedule to save time.
