Process
Part 1 - Understanding Scale Drawings and Ratios
- Start by gaining an understanding of scale drawings and ratios. Read through the following websites to learn about scale drawings.

- Next, practice your skills with these online quizzes (print your results for evaluation)

Part 2 - Drawing of Room
-
At home, measure your bedroom walls (to the nearest inch), doors, windows, and closets, and bed.
-
Create a rough sketch of your room, showing the lengths of walls, location of windows, doors, and closets. (see example below) - Record all measures on drawing
Part 3 – Shopping
http://www.kelleyfurniture.com/
- Before you decide on an item, think about its cost and size. You need it to fit into your room and fit in your budget of $1,000.00
- Keep track of the dimensions (length and width) of each item you want
- This will be needed when you make your scale drawing)
- Keep track of your purchases with an organized list. Please detail your list using an excel spreadsheet or word document. Include the following for each item:
- Item Description (example: dresser)
- Location Purchased From (example: Target)
- Cost (example: 279.99)
- Calculated Sales Tax (example: 279.99 + (279.99 * 0.06) )
- Shipping Cost (example: Included/Customer Pick Up)
- Total Cost (example: 296.79)
- Finalize your “Wish List” of each item you wish to buy. Be sure that your total does not exceed $1,000.00
Take your time when shopping for new items. Each item must meet two criteria: first, it must fit in the space you have for it in your room and second, it must cost a reasonable amount for your budget.
You may want to make a list of items you want before you start to shop. Keep in mind that your bed is staying. However, feel free to buy new sheets and blankets to match your dream.
Desired items could be: blankets, sheets, rugs, lamps, dressers, desks, nightstands, mirrors, etc.
Your scale drawing will not include the wall, so you may not want to waste your money on items that won't be seen on your drawing.
Now that your rough sketch is done, your "Wish List" is made and calculated, it's time to make your new room!
Part 4 – Scale Drawing
-
Using your original dimensions from your rough sketch in Part 2, and your purchased items from Part 3, make a detailed scale drawing of your dream room on graph paper
- Be sure to use a ruler, straightedge, and accurate scale to make your drawing perfect.
- Color and decorate your room (keep in mind the colors of the items you purchased in Part 3)
- Include your scale factor, as well as actual measurements, on your drawing.
- BE NEAT!!
Remember to include:
- the scale factor
- actual measurements on your drawing
- straight edges or exact curves (use a ruler or compass as needed)
- color and decorations (remember what you purchased)
Be neat and creative. Have Fun!
