Teacher Process

The students' tasks have already been divided into days. However, there is no problem in extending the time limit if you consider it necessary. Here are some directions for each day.

Day 1.

The first step, choosing a character, should take between 5 and 10 minutes. Make sure every student has chosen a character and that no 2 students (except when working in pairs) have chosen the same character. Have the students browse through the Internet individually. When choosing a picture for their character, make sure they choose an 18th century face. There are some early illustrations of Maori people which will be fine.

Once they have chosen a picture, ask them to start filling in their profiles.

Day 2

The objective today is to have the students make up a story for their characters. They can make up most details in their stories but make sure they don't fantasize too much. The point is to keep their stories within an 18th century historical context.

Day 3

Students in each group team up. Distribute copies of the Individual Presentation Template for each student. First, the whole group should put the story of Captain Cook's First Voyage together. Next, each student will tell the story of the arrival of the ship in New Zealand.  Make sure every student fills in his/her template.

Day 4

This is a good start to know what wikis are about. The site contains a guided tour and offers free space for your wiki.

Ideally, you should create a wiki before reaching Day 4. Ideally also, your students should already know about wikis. Today’s task is to introduce some of what the students have learnt about the period in the common wiki. Encourage them to introduce pictures and be creative. The information introduced shouldn’t be more than a page. Copy and Paste should be penalized.

Day 5

Every team should have 1 copy of the Wiki Rubric so as to avaluate the other groups. Pick up the rubrics when the students finish the assesment. Next, have them start organizing the Power Point Presentation.

Day 6

Every student should have as many Power Point Rubric copies as groups there are minus one. At the end of the presentations, have each group team up and discuss all presentations. Each team should agree on a puntuation for the other groups.
