Teacher Process

This webquest will take two weeks to complete.  It is designed for fifth grade students studying colonial Philadelphia.

STEP 1

  1. Place students in expert groups of three people each.  Give each group a trivia question.  The answer to the question will identify a building or site which the group will research.
  2. As students research their sites, they must find at least four more significant facts.
  3. Once they have gathered their facts, they should work together to design a brochure.  They will use the information they have learned to persuade a tourist to visit your site.  The brochure should include the location of the site and a picture or drawing.

STEP 2
  1. Next use a jigsaw activity to create larger groups with one representative from each site.
  2. These jigsaw groups will locate their sites on a map of Philadelphia.
  3. Using the map, each group will develop an itinerary for a walking tour including all sites.

STEP 3
  1. In this final step, the class will work cooperatively to transform their classroom into the historic district of Philadelphia.
  2. Each jigsaw group will walk the itinerary they developed while the other group members stand at their site's location.
  3. As the "tourists" arrive at each site, the experts share the important information from the brochure, speaking as the voice of the building.
