Process
Introductory exercise
- As a whole class you will brainstorm what you know about volcanoes including identifying the Earth’s layers. Then in groups of four you will do the following:
Make volcano model using plaster, wire mesh, water, play dough, tooth Picks, food coloring, vinegar and baking soda.
Then:
Flag/ mark the earth’s crust, mantle, and core
It's a Volcano
Teaching the Characteristics of Volcanoes
Ron Brown
Listen to this song.
This song is available on Intelli-Tunes' "Geography, Geology & Meteorology" Album.
Look up,there’s a fire burning!
Way up, in a mountain high!
Look up, when there’s steam, smoke, or ashes
When the crater starts to blow
And the lava starts to flow
Then you will surely know,
It’s a volcano. It’s a volcano.
Look down, in the earth’s deep zone
Way down,
under soil and rock!
You’ll find that there’s magma burning
Pushing up through the plates in the rock crust
Trying to start a fireworks show
And when the lava starts to flow
It’s a volcano. It’s a volcano.
Nature’s always changing everything we see
Always rearranging under the land and in the sea.
It’s a volcano. It’s a volcano.
Three kinds of volcanoes can happen
composite, shield, or cinder cone
But when the earth starts shaking
And the lava starts to flow
It doesn’t matter which one blows
For then you will surely know,
It’s a volcano. It’s a volcano.
It’s a volcano. It’s a volcano.
•Group 2: Forces which change the earth’s surface and the effect
You will search your texts or the internet (newspapers) to Identify the forces that change the earth’s surface. This could include factors/terms such as plate tectonics and earthquake; the effect on the environment and population. Discuss among yourself how the information will be displayed - Factor & Effect;
Draw graphs to show the number of people who died on account of a volcanic region in any two places. Outline why people continue to live in the ‘active zones’.
•
Group 3: Map Work
Research: World Wide Web to go on a Virtual Reality Field Trip
Locate and map two active volcanoes each in four regions around the world – North & South America & Hawaii, Europe, Asia, Caribbean – World Map
