 KWL: Prior Knowledge

    Now that your team of epidemiologist is assembled, you need to put your heads together.  Find out what each member of your team knows, that way you can play on each others strengths. To help your team begin a KWL worksheet is attached.  Use the worksheet to begin your Emergency Preparedness Plan dialogue.  Remember the L, learned; part of the KWL will not be done until after the project is completed.  The worksheet needs to be turned in with the final project as Appendix A.

Vocabulary Lesson

 

            By now that your team has agreed upon a specific disease certain terms will need to be defined.  Each disease has specific vocabulary that will assist individual in their understanding.  It is up to your team to determine what that vocabulary is. Having said that, there are a few requirements.  Each group must use a vocabulary chart to convey the meaning of the new words.  There are three words that must be included in your teams vocabulary list they are: epidemiologist, virus, and bacteria.  I have given you a free bee, as an example.

            Your team needs put together a list/packet of vocabulary that will be included in appendix B.  There must be the three vocabulary words above, as well as at least three specific vocabulary words from your team's Emergency Preparedness Plan, for a total of at least six.

Roles


    Once you and your team have completed the KWL worksheet,  roles will need to be assigned.  With the help of your KWL you have now discovered expertise of each individual on your team, so roles can be assigned easily.  Below are the roles.  Each team member must take on a different role.

Disease Expert – This individual will become an expert on the teams chosen disease.

Emergency Organizer – This individual will become an expert on the procedures taken during an Emergency preparedness plan.

Emergency Liaison - This individual will become and expert on the people involved in an Emergency preparedness plan.

 

Disease Expert

 

            You will use the kid's health web site and the reading guide to learn all about your team's disease.  Click on kidshealth to access the web site then follow the direction bellow.  Click on reading guide to print out the worksheet.  Your reading guide will be turned in as appendix C.

 

Steps

1. Click on kidshealth.  It will bring you to the main web page.

2. Click on Parents.

3. Click on Infections

4. Scroll down until you find your disease.

            Check out what category your disease is under, any useful information.

5. Click on your disease.

6. Use the reading guide to help find the information your team needs.

 

* If your team has chosen Anthrax, you must use the search box.  Follow steps, 1, 2, and 3, then type Anthrax into the search box. 

 

Emergency Organizer

 

      You will use the Maricopa Public Health website to learn the ins and outs of an Emergency Preparedness Plan.  Click on Maricopa Public Health to access the website. Explore the different links under Family, Business, and School to learn how other Emergency Preparedness Plans are set up.  Click on reading guide to print out a worksheet that will help you with your comprehension and note taking. Your reading guide will be turned in as appendix C.

Emergency Liaison

           

 

            You will use the Center for Disease Control website to learn about the people involved in an Emergency Preparedness Plan.  Click on the Center for Disease Control to access the CDC website.  Explore the recent outbreaks of your chosen disease.  Focus on who and how people are contacted, notified, and informed about the emergency. A CDC pamphlet will help you learn more about the recommended ways to communicate, click on CDC pamphlet to access the pamphlet.  Click on the reading guide to print out a worksheet that will help you with your comprehension and note taking. Your reading guide will be turned in as appendix C.

 

Final step: The Map & Explanation

 

            Now that each team member has become and expert in there assigned field, it is time to put your heads together.  Most of the work is done.  You should have three appendixes:

Appendix A: KWL

Appendix B: Vocabulary

Appendix C: Three different reading guides. 

The final step is making a map of your town, imaginary or real, with assigned locations for citizens to go to get help during the emergency.  Along side the map should be a detailed explanation of your teams overall plan to save your town.
