Using Ed Emberley's Picture Pie as a springboard, students create "workbook" samples to help teach fraction addition using eighths, fourths, and halves. In the process they learn about book making techniques, fraction concepts, and more about Ed Emberley's unique art for children.

Teacher Introduction

Having trouble helping students see the relationship between different sizes of fractions?  So was I!!

At the National Math conference I stumbled into a class on using literature and mathematics where I was introduced to Ed Emberley's, Picture Pie.  My mind literally exploded with ideas for using this.  I went back to the classroom and tried some of the pictures with my remediation math students.  They were hooked.

We learned to add fractions that have unlike denominators by creating and comparing fraction pieces from these pictures.
