Process
All production team members complete this task first:
Learn more about fractions of a whole and how the different sizes of fractions relate to each other by visiting the following link:(Note: if you are using a MAC computer, make sure your internet browser is opening WITHOUT Rosetta; check with your teacher if necessary. This allows JAVA to run which is needed in order to use the online manipulatives)
National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Select Fraction Pieces and work with the circle.
Use the ½, ¼, and 1/8 pieces to make whole circles.
Explore the relationship among these three sizes – the sizes Ed Emberley uses in Picture Pie. Write a math journal entry (hard copy or on a class blog) explaining how different sizes of fractions can be combined - added. What is the relationship between the three sizes of fractions you explored?
EXPERT GROUPS
You have been assigned to one of three different roles for this webquest:
Mathematician (fraction addition expert)
Publisher (book making expert)
Artist (Ed Emberley, Picture Pie illustration style expert)
Meet with your expert groups and complete the following steps:
- Research the websites found below for your group
- Discuss how you can share this information with your Design Team
- Prepare to share

MATHEMATICIAN
Learn about making equivalent fractions and adding fractions with unlike denominators.
Practice adding fractions with unlike denominators.
PUBLISHER
View and print instructions for an accordion book by clicking here. If you scroll to the bottom of the page and click the TeacherTube link you can watch Susan make an accordion book.
Click the following link to see instructions for many other book types.
The circles you will be
using to illustrate your prototype are about 1.5" in diameter. Think
about what size pages your book will need and try some out with the
materials at the bookmaking center.
ARTIST
Ed Emberley – sample video of Picture Pie
choose the “cut and paste” watch the video; how does he split the whole circle into fractional pieces? What size are the pieces?

PRODUCTION TEAMS
Meet with your Design Team. Each expert should take time to share and teach what they have learned in their expert groups.
When you have heard from each expert, begin to design your prototype:
- Design your fraction pictures
- Write the equations that will go with each picture
- Write any explanation paragraphs that will be included in your book
- Choose a book type that works with your content
- Produce the book using any materials at the publishing center, computer printouts, or any materials you bring that you feel will add to the overall appeal of the project
If you would like, you may print colored fraction circle pieces from Ed Emberley's website that are specifically meant for Picture Pie projects. Use the link below to access some of these:
