Sentence Structure and Formation

Sentences are formed properly; essay shows evidence of varied sentence beginnings, and forms.

Sentences are formed properly but there is not enough variation in sentence form.

There are incomplete sentences and/or run-ons.  Sentences are too simple and repetitive.

Vocabulary and Word Choice

Vocabulary is on or above a middle school level; creative and varied word choice enhances essay.

Below middle school level vocabulary; usage or word choice a distraction to reader.

Inappropriate or overly simplistic vocabulary; words used incorrectly.

Content

Essay includes important facts of the Saint's life; historic, miraculous, and spiritual.

Essay is missing a few important facts of the Saint's life; historic, miraculous, and spiritual.

Essay is incomplete and does not communicate the Saint's greatness.

Perspective

Author has successfully written himself/herself into the story.

Author has not successfully written himself/herself into the story.

Essay written from a perspective that does not follow instructions.

Essay contains clear spiritual messages for the future.

Essay contains  some spirtual message.

No spritual message included.
