Teacher Process
Research (Individually)
Depending on the your students ability this activity could take a couple of days or a week. In general, students need at least one class period to accomplish the research. However, if your students are not familiar with the internet or computers, this part of the process may take a while. If you do have students who are completely unfamiliar with computers, you can let them use a textbook. (Make sure that all of the information that students need are in the textbook.)
Compilation (As a Group)
This part of the assignment is accomplished as a group. I would give them ten minutes to decide which microorganism they are going to feature in their story. Make sure that they have decided by the end of the ten minutes. You can do this by writing down the group's decision. If you do not do this, some groups will take an entire class period just trying to decide which mircroorganism they are going to do.
Once they have decided they will need at least one class period to write the story and half a class period to illustrate it. In the webquest, I offered choice to use either powerpoint or plain paper. If your students know how to use powerpoint, I would definately urge them to use it. However if they are unfamilliar with it or if only a few students know how to use it, I would not give them the option. If students do not know how to use powerpoint, it makes the process a lot longer and as a teacher, you will spend the whole time answering questions about using powerpoint instead of the assignment.
