Process
Research (Individually)
1. You may choose a microorganism from the list below, however it must be different from your group members' choices.
a. Tetanus b. Polio
c. West Nile Virus d. Strep Throat
e. E-Coli f. Rabies
g. Cholera h. Chicken pox
i. Typhoid Fever j. Salmonella
2. Now that you have chosen your microorganism, click on it. You will be taken to a page where you can find the answers to the following questions. Your editor has requested that you write your answers in your science journal so that they are easier to share with your fellow authors.
a. What is the name of your microorganism?
b. Is it a virus or bacteria?
c. How is your microorganism transmitted?
d. What are the basic effects of acquiring this disease? (What are the effects on the body?)
e. How can it be prevented? (What can you do so you don’t get it)
f. What is known about treatments or cures?
*In order for your group of authors to effectively choose a microorganism, you must make sure that you have answered all questions concerning your own microorganism.

Compilation (As a group)
3. As a group, go over your answers and make sure that every author has answered all questions completely. 4. If every author in your group has answered their questions, you can now decide which microorganism you want to feature in your story.
5. In creating your story you can decide which medium you choose to present with, you can use powerpoint or pencil and paper*.
6. Make sure that you include a title page with an exciting title, all authors’ names, the date, and hour.
7. Your story needs to be at least six pages long, including the title page. Be sure that you leave room for your illustrations.
8. Remember, this story is supposed to be both fun and factual. You can write from any perspective, meaning your main character can be the microorganism or it could be someone who got sick becuases of your microorganism. However, make sure that a child can understand the terms that you use. This means that the information that you use must be simplified in your own words.
9. When you are finished writing your story, please read it through carefully. Make sure that all of the questions were addressed.
*If you are unsure about using powerpoint, materials that you will need are located at the back of the classroom.
