ID #: 9959

Subject Area: Science
Grade Level: 5

Lesson Summary
Students and teacher will have a mock scientific convention to discuss and brainstorm the topic of global warming.

Learning Objectives and Computer Functions
This lesson plan uses 3 objectives.

Objective 1: Generate a list of possible causes and effects of global warming. SC.G.1.2.7
Uses Non-Computer Tool to list causes and effects on dry erase board.

Objective 2: Generate a list of possible causes and effects of global warming. SC.G.1.2.7
Uses Non-Computer Tool to list predictions on dry erase board.

Objective 3: Make predictions about how global warming may affect different communities. SC.G.2.2.2, SC.G.2.2.3

Problem
Problem Nature
Global warming is affecting Earth\'s ecological communities.

Problem Data
generated

Notes on Using Data
Information recorded on the dry erase board is designed to stimulate interest and a general knowledge base prior to beginning individual research.

Problem Statement
At the end of this project, we will hold some debates among the scientists at this convention. We\'ll be debating how global warming is affecting different large communities on earth. These are called biomes. We\'ll be using the internet to research global warming and biomes.

Data Manipulation
Instructions
The learner used computers at intermediate level

Integration Strategies
Students, acting as real scientists at a science convention, will share their ideas and impressions about global warming and biomes.

Organization Strategies
One member of the convention (a student) will record the ideas on the board.

Elaboration Strategies
Students may revise and edit ideas as they are gathered and recorded.

Results Presentation
Student ideas will be recorded on the board.

Activities
Activities Before Using the Computer
Ideas generated provide some general knowledge that serves as a foundation for beginning research.

Strategies to develop students' attitudes towards the problem, motivation, and overall mindfulness:
Remind students of the ultimate goal: debate using logical arguments based on facts gathered through research.

Activities While Using the Computer
Students will work at the computer

Group Information:
Students will not use the computer during the phase of the project.

Activities After Using the Computer
Not applicable.

Supporting Activities
Not applicable.

Assessment
Students will be assessed by means of:

Included in the assessment:
The group assessment is oral.
