Subject Area: Science
Grade Level: 5

Lesson Summary
Students will learn about six land biomes (rainforest, tundra, taiga, grassland, desert, and temperature broadleaf forest) and the affects of global warming on each of these biomes and design and create 7 PowerPoint slides to show what they learn.

Learning Objectives and Computer Functions
This lesson plan uses 10 objectives.

Objective 1: Design and create 7 PowerPoint slides. SC.H.1.2.2
Objective 2: Edit slides for accurate spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure using word processing tools and dictionary. SC.H.1.2.1
Objective 3: Present slides to teammates and whole class. SC.H.1.2.3, SC.H.1.2.4

Objective 7:
Objective 8:
Objective 9:
Objective 10:

Problem
Problem Nature
Man\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s affect on the natural world.

Problem Data

Notes on Using Data
Web sites will be linked to a student Web Quest and will be accessed through the internet.

Problem Statement
Explain how global warming may affect Earth\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s major ecological communities.

Data Manipulation
Instructions
The learner used computers at intermediate level

Integration Strategies
Information found via the internet will be recorded on a Think Sheet, which will be used to create PowerPoint slides.

Organization Strategies
Students will design and create 7 PowerPoint slides: (1) title slide, (2) slide on global warming, (3) slide on location of a specific biome and world biome map, (4) rainfall/temperature data and other interesting or unique facts/features of biome, (5) plants of biome, (6) animals of biome, and (7) some problems created in this biome by global warming.

Elaboration Strategies
Add slide transitions, layouts, and designs; add animation, color, action buttons, and pictures

Results Presentation

Present slides to teammates and to the whole class.

Activities
Activities Before Using the Computer
Research using internet links to find information; record on Think Sheet.

Strategies to develop students' attitudes towards the problem, motivation, and overall mindfulness:
Teacher should emphasize that slides should help the student convince his teammates and classmates about the dangers of global warming to their biome.

Activities While Using the Computer
Students will work at the computer

Group Information:
Individual laptop computers are available.

Activities After Using the Computer
Meet teammates to share PowerPoint slides and discuss.

Supporting Activities
Groups must make a team decision about which biome is most affected by global warming.

Assessment
Students will be assessed by means of:

Included in the assessment:
The rubric will provide criteria for the presentation of PowerPoint slides.
