This WebQuest has been designed to help learners develop a foundational knowledge of computer networking and Internet topologies.

Introduction

We live in a world that we think is dominated by computers but that in actuality is dependent on servers and computer networks. A network is defined by Webopedia as “(n.) A group of two or more computer systems linked together.” They exist so that data can be shared among computers/users. A basic understanding of computer networking is invaluable for individuals to be able to make informed decisions regarding issues of data management and communications. This WebQuest has been designed to help individuals develop a sound foundational knowledge of computer networking.

Your journey will take you to a number of web-based resources including a book by Clayton Coulter entitled Understanding Networking Technologies. You will complete a series of guiding questions and put your knowledge to use in the creation of a PowerPoint presentation that you will use to educate others on the major concepts and issues that impact computer networking.

Along the way, you will come to appreciate the rich history of networking. For example, as early as 1926, Serbian icon, Nicolas Tesla, envisioned a future where electronic communications systems and wireless technology create a world where all individuals are able to communicate with one another instantaneously, irrespective of distance. His predictions included a future where these instruments will be able to be carried in a person’s pocket (Stewart, 2000).

In 1962, Liklider, as head of the computer research department at the Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) discussed the concept of a “Galactic Network” comprised of a globally interconnected set of computers through which individuals could share information (Leiner, 2010). Additionally, in 1964, Marshall McCluhan introduced to concept of the global village in his seminal work Understanding Media (1964). He explained that advances in electronic media were transforming the world into a global village where information is transmitted instantaneously overcoming spatial and temporal distances altering social spheres and heightening human awareness.
