Students will become familiar with Greek and Latin root words, with the understanding that they are always spelled the same way and have the same meaning. Furthermore, students will realize that they can use Greek and Latin roots and affixes to find the meaning of new words.
Teacher Introduction
I have developed this webquest for third through sixth grade, but it could be adapted for third grade since rootwords are in the third grade curriculum. When working with third and fourth graders, I would do Process 1 and 2 together as a class. Younger students may need more examples of "newly created" words before they try to create their own. You will need to point out how knowing root words help studetns do better on standardized tests.
