Process

Group Assignments (Older children): Please decide which person in your group will do each job.

Younger children work in groups of two: One is the Reader Leader/time keeper, and the other is the materials manager/recorder. The materials manager is the only one to leave the group for materials.

Reader Leader: This person reads the information on the Webquest so that everyone in the group can hear. Make sure everyone in the group understands what to do. Seek help if something isn't clear. Report any of the group who are goofing off to the teacher. This person will need to be a good clear reader and be able to work with others in a nice way.

Task Master and Time Keeper: This person keeps the group on task and reports any people not doing their job to the Reader Leader. This person keeps track of the alloted time for work periods. This person will have to know how to tell time and keep the group moving.

Materials Manager: This person acquires and provdes any materials that the group needs. This is the only person who may leave the group. This person will need to be able to move quickly and quietly to and from areas in the classroom.

Recorder: This person listens closely to each member of the group. The Recorder writes down important information and puts all of the group's information together. Handwriting must be neat and easy to read by all in the group. Don't forget to ask questions of your group if something is not clear.

Each of you will do the necessary research to prepare a presentation for Mr. Pennypincher. This presentation will be your group's recommendations to Mr. Pennypincher. You must tell him where to set up his farm, what to plant there, and what he will need to get started. You must support you conclusions with data. Remember, his financial life is in your hands! Include all of the information that you have gathered in the three tasks on the task page to support your recommendations. Read the rubric carefully!

Older children: You may wish to do a jigsaw and divide the work up between group members. (Remember everyone must positively work together, be accountable individually, participate equally, and depend of each other in a positive manner. No put downs!!)

Use the Structure of Simultaneous Roundtable to share and add to ideas gathered by the group.

Younger Children: Use Think, Pair, Share to share information.

Task 1: Gather information about the three geographical regions of Utah. Find out soil types, climate, precipitation, length of growing season, and what types of plant life can thrive in the areas. Be able to explain how to identify the three types of Utah soils to Mr. Pennypincher. Decide on a crop for Mr. Pennypincher to grow. You must tell what crop to plant and why it will be successful.
