Process
Pack your necessities and leap into your Model T -- T4, that is! Your Trusty Time Travel Transport is always ready to go.
Process I: Research
Refresher Course--Entire Team
Your first stop: a visit to a "refresher course" in volcanoes, plate tectonics, and other important information. Choose from the following.
- Volcanoes and Plate Tectonics
- This Dynamic Earth: The Story of Plate Tectonics
- This Dynamic Planet
- Volcanoes of the United States
Volcano Visits--Entire Team
Remember to include at least one volcanic event in California as you visit at least:
- 2 volcanic events from the distant past;
- 1 volcanic event from the recent past (within the last 50 years); and
- 1 possible future event.
Select your destinations from the following:

Process II: Share
Consult Other Experts
Each member of your team is a capable expert in his/her field, so each one knows the value of consulting with other experts.
At this point, having returned to the present, the experts on your team will consult other experts to compare notes, share observations, and interpret findings within their respective fields of expertise.
All Cartographers meet together to share and discuss their maps.
All Statisticians meet together to share and discuss their spreadsheets and charts.
All Technologists meet together to share and discuss their technology research.
All Media Specialists meet together to share and discuss their presentations.
Be sure to see Evaluation to see the criteria on which you will be graded.
Evaluation and Recommendation
Return to your team and share what you have learned.
As you and your team review the research, you must evaluate what you have learned and shared in order to make a recommendation to SOLVE.
To help your team achieve agreement on the technology to recommend, you should consult the following Process Guides:
Process Guide #8: Persuasive Arguments
Process Guide #2: Building Consensus

Process III: Create and Present
Multimedia Presentation
-
1 slide or more introducing your team and the topic
-
1 slide or more about the relationship between plate tectonics and volcanoes
-
1 slide or more for the maps
-
1 slide for each volcano you visited, with an image and details
-
1 slide or more for the charts
-
1 slide or more describing technologies for monitoring volcanoes and predicitng volcanic events
-
1 slide or more describing your analysis of the technologies
-
1 slide with your recommendation to SOLVE
-
1 slide with proper citations for all of your sources
Be sure to see Evaluation to see the criteria on which you will be graded.
Presentation to SOLVE
Every member of your team must participate and give part of the oral presentation.
-
Each team member will present the information for 1 of the volcanoes visited.
-
Other portions should be divided equitably among all members of your team.
-
Each team member should rehearse his or her part in front of the other team members so that they can offer constructive suggestions for improvement.
-
When your rehearsal is complete, you will be ready to make your presentation and recommendation to SOLVE.
Be sure to see Evaluation to see the criteria on which you will be graded.
SOLVE
While other teams make their presentations to SOLVE, your team will join with others who are not presenting. Together you will portray SOLVE.
-
You will listen to each presentation quietly and respectfully.
-
You will consider all of the research and recommendations.
-
At the conclusion of all presentations, you will vote on which technology SOLVE should fund.
Be sure to see Evaluation to see the criteria on which you will be graded.
