Students will study the context of historical setting to gain a deeper understanding of a literary text. They will do this by looking at numerous websites related to the historical background of the novel. The novel, Out of the Dust, takes place during the Dust Bowl. Students will look at information related to the 1930s, such as the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the New Deal and the Dust Bowl.

Students will utilize their knowledge of the historical background of a novel and their creativity to create a group project based on the setting. Using the information they gained from their historical research, students will look deeper into the food people ate at the time, the value of money, historical information about the Great Depression, Dust Bowl, FDR, the New Deal, music and fashion. They will then use this to plan different aspects for a Dust Day party. During the party, they will present and share what they learned with the class.

Students will utilize technology in a meaningful way. Through this project, they will be using the Internet to research and plan their collaborative project.
