The Victims of the Holocaust
Teacher Process
Process:
-
Length of time for completion: 1-2 weeks
-
ESE and LEP accomodations: Ensure that these students are placed into groups with higher-level students. They can work together in order to benefit from each other's strengths.
-
Implementation Guide:
-
Introduce the topic of the Holocaust. This can be done through text reading, internet resources, as provided by the Webquest, or other readings accessible to you. This is important because it is important to understand the Holocaust as a whole in order to be able to evoke the empathy and sympathy needed for students to be motivated creators.
-
Explain how a Webquest works. You can use other examples from WebQuest.org, in order to model the process. Separate the class into groups, ensuring that all groups are fairly created. Assign them a group of victims. Clarify any questions.
-
Introduce this Webquest. For those without internet access, print out the webquest, and verify that at least one member of each group has internet access. Provide them with the evaluation chart, and explain how they will be graded. Also, show them different examples of memorials. Have the class analyze how the memorials teach and evoke emotional responses from an audience.
-
Allow them time to complete the WebQuest in class and at home. Periodically check with each group to see their progress.
-
Collect the three components. Have presentations. Allow classmates to critique each other.
-
If you can, have a curator come in to look at the projects, or have students visit a museum or memorial. This will allow students a sense of pride and accomplishment.
