New Mexico State Standards for Grade 6

History Standard 1

Students are able to identify important people and events in order to analyze significant patterns, relationships, themes, ideas, beliefs, and turning points in New Mexico, United States, and world history in order to understand the complexity of the human experience.

6. Compare and contrast the political and economic events and the social and geographic characteristics of Medieval European life and its enduring impacts on later civilizations, to include:

READING AND LISTENING FOR COMPREHENSION: Students will apply strategies and skills to comprehend information that is read, heard, and viewed.

3. Explore expressive materials that are read, heard, or viewed.

4. Identify and interpret figurative language in an oral selection.

1. Assume a variety of roles in group discussions (e.g., active listener, discussion leader, facilitator, reporter/synthesizer).

2. Clarify, illustrate, and expand upon topics in discussions.

3. Use oral clues to indicate levels of certainty (e.g., “what if,” “very likely,” “I'm unsure of”).

2. Identify the various themes in literary works.

Visual Arts Standard 6 

Show increased awareness of diverse peoples and cultures through visual and performing arts.

A. Compare and describe artwork of various eras and cultures; and

    1. Compare and contrast artworks and artifacts from two dissimilar world cultures.

B. Recognize historical and cultural themes, trends, and styles in various works of art.

    1. Sort and classify a variety of art objects within an identified historical and  

        cultural context.

    2. Create art that reflects a particular period within a specific culture.

Health Education Standard 1

Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.

As a result of health instruction, students will explain the relationship between positive health behaviors and the prevention of injury, illness, disease, and premature death.

Physical Education Standard 5

Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.

A. Select and utilize safety principles in physical activity settings;

B. Exhibit appropriate personal and group conduct appropriate while engaging in physical activity;

C. Recognize the influence of peer pressure and make appropriate decisions using problem solving techniques to resolve conflict; and

D. Work cooperatively with a group to achieve group goals.
