Process
In order to carry out your task you have to be confident in simple maths that involves money. We are going to start with some simple addition and subtraction. Dollars are whole numbers cents are not. For example $50 in a maths problem is expressed as 50.00 where 5c is expressed as 00.05.
The following is an example of the processes you should use when solving simple maths when it involves money.
$50 - 5c =
50.00
- 00.05
49.95
Attempt these few problems. Try to work them out without a calculator. If you have trouble refer back to this example.
$50 - $20 = $29 + 0c =
$35 + 70c = 50c + 50c =
$5 - 18c = $30 + 20c =
25c + $2 = $20 + $2 + 50c=
$45 + $5 = $100 + $50 - 5c =
Allow a partner to mark your work. Create another five sums like the ones above and have one of your fellow group members try to solve them.
Now that you are confident you can begin research into value. This process involves Researching luxury items. From the links below choose an (1) expensive item that you think would be valuable in a household. Do this by following prompts to the catalogue.
When you have chosen your expensive item move on to the next process.
Now that you have decided upon your expensive item consider the following. Take the price of your item and write it down use that figure and find out how many of a (1) necessity (a necessity is something that you need ie. bread; milk; washing powder) you can buy for that price. You can use your local food store's catalogue or one of the following:
Now you can make a decision of what you beleive is more valuable. Do you think that your luxury item is more important or the many necessities that you could buy for the amount of that one luxury item. Once you have made your own decision build a justification of why you feel this way.
The final process of this webquest is to create a persuasive speech for your peers. By the end of your speech your peers should be able to see your view clearly and even feel the same way as you. Use your justification to aide your speech this should not be difficult if you have written a precise and detailed justification. Present your speech to your class using evidence of your findings.
