Introduction
Students will be exposed to the application of Microsoft Excel to generate a p-chart and recognize this as a data analysis technique used to determine if an operations process has gone out of statistical control. Students will be informed that a p-chart can be generated for constant or varying sample size with a cautionary note regarding the differing terms used in reference to the variety of p-charts – individual, constant sample size, varying sample size. An in-classroom demonstration application will be for a varying sample size. Students will be provided with additional information to get an idea of how to generate other p-charts. Thereafter, students will be provided an opportunity to replicate a chart using a different data set as a homework assignment. Subsequently, students will be required to gather sample data of their own from an existing operation in order to produce a second p-chart.
