Rules of Capitalization: Rules, Practice, Quiz, and Feedback

Part 1

What words are capitalized?

Proper nouns

Proper nouns are always capitalized (names: Mrs. Harris, places: McDonald's, holidays: Valentine's Day).

The word "I"

Whenever you use the word "I" in a sentence, it must be capitalized.

The first word in a sentence

When you start a new sentence, you always capitalize the first word.

Words in the title of a book

Every important word in the title of a book, movie, or play should be capitalized.  The title should also be underlined.

First word in quotations

When a full quotation is used, the first word should be capitalized.
