Process

Each team will be given three full class periods to work on their newsletter in the lab. You will need to arrange time outside of school with your group members to complete the project. In order to accomplish the task, you will need to follow these steps:
1. First you will be assigned to a team of four other students and assigned a topic.
2. Visit the websites that have been listed for your topic.
3. Gather information that is related to your topic. Save this information to a disc or flash drive.
4. Make sure to also write down the sources you are using as you will have to cite them in your newsletter.
5. While you are researching the sites and gathering information, make sure to find and save some interesting graphics and pictures that are related to your topic.

Part Two:
After you have conducted all of your research you should take the following steps:
1. Write a rough draft main feature story on your topic. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate what you have learned and also to teach the
rest of the class the information.
2. Write a rough draft of two minor articles that give more details and information about your topic.
3. Proofread your drafts for: content, clarity and mechanics.
4. Make sure that with each article, you site the source from which you collected the information. Also make sure to summarize information into your own words. Check out these websites for citing sources and avoiding plagiarism:

Part Three:
Now you are ready to begin formatting your newsletter layout. It would be helpful to use a copy of a real newspaper as a model.
Complete the following steps:
1. *Using Microsoft Publisher, select the theme for your newsletter.
2. Create a title for your newsletter.
3. Type the final version of each of your three stories.
4. Select graphics and pictures which go along with the theme of your paper and which highlight your topic.
5. Make sure to save your work.
*A quick review of Publisher:
1. Open Publisher.
2. Select "blank publications for print."
3. Scroll down to "newsletter" and select. Begin creating.

The Crossword Puzzle...
Create a crossword puzzle for your newsletter. You will create a crossword puzzle based on facts relating to your topic. The rest of the class, after hearing your presentation and reading your stories, will complete your crossword puzzle. Here are the steps to take:
1. Your crossword puzzle must have a minimum of 12 clues and answers.
2. You and your team members must make up a minimum of 12 questions based on your stories and provide a one word answer for each.
3. Go to http://www.puzzle-maker.com/CW/ and follow the instructions for creating your puzzle
4. Copy and paste your puzzle into your newsletter.*
* If you are unable to directly copy from puzzlemaker and paste into your newsletter, you may have to print out your crossword puzzle and manually cut and paste it into your newsletter after you have printed out the newsletter. If this is the case, make sure to format an area in your newsletter where you will later add the crossword before you print out the final copy.
Part Five:
Finally... Put finishing touches on your newspaper:
1. Use interesting and creative fonts.
2. Choose colors for your overall layout.
3. Add any additional touches to make your newsletter unique and creative.
4. Last... Print out a copy and turn it into your teacher.
