Teacher Process
This WebQuest should take approximately 2 weeks to complete.
The students will begin with an exploration of the area, perimeter and volume of cylinders and prisms. Some background in these areas may prove helpful as the lessons provided are detailed and involved. Be prepared to guide students in further explorations of these concepts as needed.
Once kids have finished the geometric research and practice, have them discuss with the class the purpose of understanding unit rates. They should also compare their results; you can even have them debate their shape recommendations. Above all, make sure they see the Keebler Elves Presentation PowerPoint again. They'll be impressed at how much more sense it makes now.
The next step in this project is to begin designing a container for crackers. The lessons on volume and shape will give the students the information needed to make an informed decision. There are additional steps included in the first process that direct the students to gather information about existing cracker packages. Feel free to include more activities as needed for your students.
The culminating activity is the writing of a persuasive letter to the Keebler Elves. Students will be guided through the processes involved in writing a persuasive business letter. The idea is for students to explain their reasons for recommending a particular shaped cracker and package.
Once students have completed the letter, they are to practice editing skills by exchanging letters and following editing procedures. This will help students become more confident when editing future assignments.
The premise of the project is to allow students an opportunity to solve a real-world problem, to create an original product, and to express their ideas in a formal manner.
